Britain’s Got Talent 2009

Updated: May 24, 2021

I remember seeing in the 2009 Britain’s Got Talent, a 47 year old homely-looking Scottish woman with a thick Scottish accent did not impress the judges when she made her first appearance. Susan Boyle’s audition performance amazed and inspired many people around the world since. She has since become a singing sensation, sold over 19 million records worldwide and nominated for 2 Grammy Awards.

One of the biggest mistakes we can make is to focus on the externals. Is he well-dressed? Is he good-looking? Is she well-educated? Does she have good-manners? What is their family background? What do they do? Often we judge a book by its covers and fall for good graphic design or PR. On the other hand we can totally look down upon a person’s potential or worth by focussing on the external. The prophet Samuel learned a valuable lesson when Jesse brought forth Eliab, a mighty looking man. Samuel was very impressed by his appearance but God thought differently, in 1 Sam 16:7 (NIV) 7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” David did not look as impressive as he was small in stature, but his heart was right before God. Hence, we should not value people by appearances or external factors. But look within, at the heart.
