Reflections Wilson Lim 3 June 2026 Integrity Before God Respectability is gained when others can see the consistent uprightness. Respectability is difficult to gain and easy to lose. Proverbs 21:21 (NIV) He who pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity and honor. Pursue what is right and we shall gain honour or respectability before others. And most importantly, maintain integrity before the eyes of God. I have determined that I will maintain integrity before God. Sometimes, this means being disadvantaged. We may feel at times, that we will be disadvantaged in business or at work because we choose the path of righteousness. But God will eventually vindicate us. - A Roadmap for Spiritual Maturity | Wilson & Lai Ling
Reflections Wilson Lim 3 June 2026 A Roadmap for Spiritual Maturity Do we look at the criteria for elders and deacons in the Bible, and think, "Well, that is not for me"? Yet the Scriptures challenge us towards maturity, indeed to be more like Christ. Ephesians 4:13 (NIV) 13until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Hence, the criteria for deacons and elders should also serve as an aspirational goal in our lives. Can you find elders and deacons that you know of, who can serve as inspiration to you to mature more? - Growing in Self Control | Wilson & Lai Ling
Reflections Wilson Lim 3 June 2026 Growing in Self Control Are we developing in our self-control? Are we helping our children develop in self-control? I realise that while growing up, if our parents expect us to exercise self-control and they model it for us, we tend to gain a better appreciation of self-control. But parents who continue to excuse their children's lack of self-control often end up with adults who struggle with self-control. Galatians 5:22–23 — “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control…” Where are you at in your self-control? Do you desire to develop in it more? If so, what are you doing about it? - The Right Order of Love | Wilson & Lai Ling
Reflections Wilson Lim 6 May 2026 The Right Order of Love How then should we love? The correct priority was given by Jesus Himself in Matthew 22:37 - 39 (NIV) 37Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ So, first love God with all that we are. That is the highest priority. Then love our neighbour as we love ourselves. In The City of God, Augustine wrote, “Two cities have been founded by two loves, the earthly by the love of self, even to the contempt of God. The heavenly by the love of God, even to the contempt of self. The former, in a word, glorifies itself, the latter the Lord.” We should examine our own hearts carefully and honestly. Do we love ourselves more than God? If so, we need to repent of this misdirected love and turn our love to God instead. Otherwise we may find ourselves amongst the unholy lovers. - What is your perspective of God ? | Wilson & Lai Ling
Reflections Wilson Lim 6 May 2026 What is your perspective of God ? Gideon had a perspective of God in Judges 6:13 (NIV) "But sir," Gideon replied, "if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our fathers told us about when they said, 'Did not the LORD bring us up out of Egypt?' But now the LORD has abandoned us and put us into the hand of Midian." What was Gideon’s perspective of God at that time? His perspective was that God had abandoned them. God did not care about them anymore. If our perspective is that God does not care, we would not turn to God. Even if we ask, He would not give us the time of day. Why bother God when He is not bothered about us? If our perspective is that God is not powerful enough, we would not rely on Him. Why go to God if He is not able to help us? What is your perspective of God today? Reflections Wilson Lim 6 May 2026 From Low Self-Image to Divine Purpose Judges 6:15 (NIV) "But Lord," Gideon asked, "how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family." Do you know how destructive a poor confession of who we are can be to ourselves? Many lives are simply stuck in the land of survival simply because of a poor self-image? We think we cannot do better. How many men today believe that they will be poor fathers? How many women believe that they are not valuable? Do you know why many amongst the poor remain poor through generations? Do you know why many amongst the disempowered remain disempowered through the generations? Do you know why the marginalised often remain marginalised through the generations? Because they have believed the lie that they are nobodies. People often remain in poverty and disempowerment, not because they lack opportunities but because they lack the right perspective. - Self-Love or God-First Love? | Wilson & Lai Ling
Reflections Wilson Lim 6 May 2026 Self-Love or God-First Love? It is good when we are able to love ourselves. Yet such love can be distorted too. 2 Timothy 3:1-2 (NIV) 1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves… Here, the self-love is overboard. It is not about having a healthy self-esteem but a love centred upon oneself. A love that elevates self above God and the things of God! It is a misdirected love. When we direct our love to ourselves, over God – we begin to act out of self-will rather than towards God’s will. And that is how Adam and Even fell. Because they believed that they too can be as God and acted out of self-love. The danger in some churches today is to over-emphasise on gaining a positive self-image, having a love for oneself, etc but neglect to have it anchored upon a love for God. Some claim that it is not possible to love God without first loving himself rightly. Yet self-love is best gained through experiencing God’s love. For God’s love demonstrates true love as it should be. It is when we experience love shown to us, it is when we discover how valuable we are to God, that we begin to love ourselves rightly.
