- Cycle of self-indulgence | Wilson & Lai Ling
Reflections Wilson Lim 5 June 2024 Cycle of self-indulgence 2 Timothy 3:2-4 (NIV) People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money … lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. The self-centred can progressively become more self-indulgent, spending more and more on themselves for themselves. If we look at where society is headed today, we see clearer the extent of self-indulgence amongst especially the westernized cultures. The size of the cosmetics market is estimated to be $1.5 billion annually in Australia alone and about US$330 billion in the world. Cosmetics for men is a rapidly increasing market. Some men today spend more on cosmetics than the average woman. We are a self-indulgent society that is splashing billions of dollars each year in looking good, in cosmetics, in clothes, etc. Now I am not saying that women (and man) should not spend anything on looking good! But the issue is whether we are becoming over-indulgent in our spending. The self-centred focus on gaining more that they may have more for themselves. The more they have the more they want, because it means more to indulge themselves. As God ’s people, we must be careful not to be trapped in this cycle of self-indulgence. We should carefully examine our spending patterns and ask ourselves if we are slipping into self-indulgence. When we indulge ourselves in such ways, we have much less to invest in what truly counts, God’s Kingdom. Instead of helping the needy, we help ourselves. - Gifted For A Purpose | Wilson & Lai Ling
Reflections Wilson Lim 8 October 2025 Gifted For A Purpose God gives us gifts. God gives us natural gifts which we have to develop in our lifetime. It may be a giftedness in music, or writing, or in speaking, analysing, in leading, etc. God also gives spiritual gifts when we first come to Christ. These often add upon our natural giftedness. God gives gifts along the way through prayer or impartation. 1 Timothy 4:14 (NIV) Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you. God gives to every believer giftedness, so that we may effectively serve the church. One of the keys is to recognise what God has gifted you. Do you know what yours are? - Would you be described as sincere in your faith? | Wilson & Lai Ling
Reflections Wilson Lim 4 May 2022 Would you be described as sincere in your faith? Would you be described as sincere in your faith? 2 Timothy 1:5 (NIV) I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. It is not how conservatively well behaved we are. It is not whether we listen to good Christian music and have nice safe Christian tastes in clothes and accessories. It is not even measured by whether we have a deep grasp of theology and have great apologetics on why we believe and what we believe. It is not even how much we have achieved in our ministry. Now, there is nothing wrong with any of the above. In fact, it would be great if you have all the above. But these are not the true measure of the sincerity of our faith, though they may provide some indicators. The sincerity of our faith is measured by the commitment we have in our hearts to Christ. Basically it means a genuine, authentic faith. The real stuff. To get to the real stuff, we have to strip away all our outer layer of Christianese. What are we going to find there? - God disciplines those He loves | Wilson & Lai Ling
Reflections Wilson Lim 6 April 2022 God disciplines those He loves Have you ever noticed that God uses both the carrot and stick approaches? In the Bible you find God challenging the Israelites with blessings and curses. Blessings if you obey and curses if they disobey. Rewards if we obey God and punishment if we don't? God's example teaches us an important way to deal with those who are immature in their thinking such as children. God disciplines those He loves because He does not want us to go the wrong way. Prov 3:11-12 (NIV) 11 My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline and do not resent his rebuke,12 because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in. - When Pride Takes Over | Wilson & Lai Ling
Reflections Wilson Lim 5 March 2025 When Pride Takes Over Scriptures warn of the rise of the self-lovers in 2 Timothy 3:1-4 (NIV) 1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited… These self-lovers will be self-centred. And one major evidence of self-centredness is pride. Scriptures speak of those “boastful, conceited”. They think very highly of themselves, of their opinions, of their perspectives. Do we find ourselves thinking so highly of our own opinion, perspective, etc that we fail to carefully consider what others are saying to us? If so, we are in danger of too much pride in our hearts. Another major evidence is having little consideration of others. Scriptures here speak of those who are “abusive, without love, ungrateful, unforgiving, slanderous, brutal, treacherous” etc. They could not care much about others because they consider others of lesser value, compared to themselves. If they mistreat others on their way to getting what they want, so be it! Are we showing signs of such neglect of others? Could it be we consider others of lower value than ourselves? Then we need to move away from such self-centredness. Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp LinkedIn Pinterest Copy link Recent Posts See All God does not leave us... - How much do we want God? | Wilson & Lai Ling
Reflections Wilson Lim 2 February 2022 How much do we want God? Why is it that one Christian can come into a Sunday service and encounter God while another can sit right beside him and encounter nothing except a pesky fly? One experiences the kabod glory and is weeping, repenting, rejoicing, strengthened, etc. While another is just swatting the fly. The Scriptures assure us that if we seek God wholeheartedly, we will find Him. Jer 29:13 (NIV) You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. The more intensely, the more desperately even, we seek God - the greater the likelihood of encountering God. How much do we want God? - Are We Missing God? | Wilson & Lai Ling
Reflections Wilson Lim 6 August 2025 Are We Missing God? I stuck me during my devotional time that God just refuses to fit any mould. 1 Corinthians 1:22 - 24 (NIV) 22 Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. The Jews expected the Saviour to be proven by signs and wonders like the time of Moses. The Greeks expect that God should be revealed by incredible eloquence of thought and wisdom. But God refuses to meet their expectations. God will be God and He will do as He pleases. It is we who need to adjust our expectations. Those who fail to adjust their expectations and demands will be doomed by their narrow-mindedness to miss God. May we re-examine our paradigms humbly. It could be that we are already missing God in some areas because we have fixed some paradigms which God never asked us to.
